Better student mental health support

by Helen - 1st March 2018

University Mental Health Day, backed by Student Minds and the University Mental Health Advisers Network, encourages students, academics, support staff and university leaders to consider the part they can play in positive mental health at university, and highlights how students can seek help and support for mental health problems.

The number of students seeking help for mental health issues is rising, with five times as many students today as ten years ago disclosing a mental health condition to their university. The IPPR reported this increase over the ten years from 2006 to 2016 in Not by Degrees: Improving student mental health in the UK’s universities and found that the higher education sector is facing significant increases in demand for counselling services, with a 94% increase in demand over five years.

Universities UK recommends that universities focus on student mental health as a priority and develop whole university approaches. It is promoting a stepchange framework to support higher education leaders to implement a population approach to student mental health, and work more closely with local NHS services to coordinate care for students. Key aspects of the framework are the use of evidence based interventions and the consistent collection of data to baseline current practice, track progress and measure outcomes for student mental wellbeing.

We’re here to help. The iaptus digital care record system supports services to manage referrals and securely store records, and guides therapists to collect data within group and individual therapy sessions. iaptus is trusted by psychological therapy services and community mental health teams, including NHS general practices based on campus. The system is used by 70% of services in the NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme.

Get in touch to discuss how iaptus could support your counselling service and to arrange a demonstration.
