“It is important that routine data collection of key indicators of child and adolescent mental health service activity, patient experience and patient outcomes are properly co-ordinated.” Future in Mind, The Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Taskforce
The Future in Mind report highlighted a significant gap in CAMHS data. It stated that the collection of data at national level would ensure accountability and transparency, driving improvements across children and young people’s mental health services.
The report identified the strengths of the CYP IAPT programme which requires the collection of clinically relevant routine outcome monitoring in session. This data is used to select and guide treatment and to benchmark its quality across services without creating additional burden for providers. Future in Mind also described the collection of CAMHS data at national level as being ‘critical to driving change in a coordinated way’.
From 1st January, all NHS-funded CAMHS providers have been mandated to begin collecting data in accordance with the new Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS), for reporting in February 2016. For the first time, CAMHS data will be reported to the HSCIC and used to inform service improvements, to monitor performance, clinical interventions, patient experience and outcomes. This change will require a significant shift in working practices for most CAMHS providers.
Providers are considering how to develop their data management processes and invest in IT systems and mobile technology to support the collection and transfer of data for reporting on the MHSDS by end February.
iaptus CYP is a bespoke specialist patient management system designed specifically for CAMHS and CYP IAPT services. The system ensures the collection of complete and high quality data to meet the requirements of the new data set. It maps data to the relevant CAMHS fields in the data set and securely transfers reports to the HSCIC.
The system guides therapists to collect and monitor clinical information within routine practice as recommended by the CYP IAPT programme. It allows young people to securely complete questionnaires with their therapist in-session on a tablet, so the act of data collection becomes an integral part of the therapy itself.
