There are currently 3.4 million people living with Type 2 diabetes in England, with around 5 million more people at high risk of developing the condition. Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle change, and at present its treatment accounts for just under nine per cent of the annual NHS budget, or £8.8 billion a year.
Diabetes Prevention Week is raising awareness of the causes of Type 2 diabetes and the serious complications associated with it. The campaign has been launched by the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP), the flagship programme jointly run by NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK to help people at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to become healthier and avoid the condition. The free service offers tailored coaching support which includes education around lifestyle choices, as well as advice on weight loss and physical activity.
There are many similarities in the way that services are provided by the NDPP and the IAPT programme. Both offer evidence-based, low intensity intervention in the community with service users referred by their GP or referring themselves to the programme. The measurement of patient outcomes and experience of services is central to treatment in both programmes.
As with IAPT, a national data quality programme requires NDPP providers to report to NHS Digital against a national dataset, with this data being used to evaluate the programme’s success. A NDPP progress report published in December shows that since the programme launched in 2016, more than 110,000 people have been offered the service, and the programme now has 75% coverage across the country.
The iaptus patient record system was created alongside our partners and clients in the IAPT setting, and has been adapted for use by diabetes prevention services in the NDPP. iaptus has a built-in understanding of the routine collection of high quality patient experience and outcomes data, and is entrusted with the data of over three million patients.
Are you seeking a flexible patient record system to help you to run an efficient diabetes prevention service? Contact us to find out how iaptus can support your service.
The NDPP framework will be renewed in March 2019 and NHSE and PHE are currently engaging with potential suppliers on the future of the programme nationally, including how more remote and digital options can be offered. Suppliers interested in being involved in the market engagement can find out more and register their interest here.
