Beginning in February, and for the first time, all NHS-funded CAMHS and CYP IAPT providers will report data monthly to the HSCIC. This development comes with the introduction of the new Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS) which covers people of all ages in contact with England’s mental health and learning disabilities services.
Statistics will be published nationally, used to inform policies and service improvements, and to improve patient experience. At local level, services will be able to use the data for their own monitoring and management.
What does this mean for CAMHS?
CAMHS must report on the mandatory fields in the data set each month, and there is a range of additional non-mandatory fields that providers can opt to report on. Providers should prepare to submit their monthly data through the Bureau Service Portal website. The HSCIC has published full guidance and providers should make their IT teams aware of the HSCIC’s Technical Guidance which details the infrastructure and information governance requirements for submitting reports.
What steps can my service take to prepare?
We know that preparing to make this change can seem overwhelming. The way that providers prepare to make their first data return to HSCIC depends on the type of database or online system that they are using to collect and store data. If your service uses an online system, there are several questions that you can ask of your system provider to ensure that your service is in good shape:
- Has the system been updated to collect the mandatory data for the MHSDS?
You’ll need to check with your system supplier that the data can be ‘mapped’ to the MHSDS mandatory fields.
- What additional non-mandatory data can the system collect?
Services that already collect more than just the mandatory MHSDS data will want to check that their system can map this additional non-mandatory data to MHSDS fields.
- What standard reports are available for the MHSDS return?
There are four mandatory reports to return to HSCIC and 44 additional optional reports, and you will want to check that your system carries all mandatory reports and the additional optional reports relevant to your service.
In many cases, providers are considering how to update their data management systems to support the collection and transfer of data to the HSCIC.
iaptus CYP is a bespoke specialist patient management system designed specifically for CAMHS and CYP IAPT services. The system ensures the collection of complete and high quality data to meet the requirements of the new data set. It maps data to the relevant CAMHS fields in the data set and produces monthly reports for submission to the HSCIC.
iaptus CYP
