Taking a few minutes away from your computer several times each day can have a big effect on the health of your body – not to mention your mind. Studies have proven that breaks also help improve focus and creativity, boosting productivity.
At Mayden we do our best to take regular breaks – simply stepping away from the computer for a few minutes to get the blood moving can be really refreshing.
We also try to keep an eye out for each other, reminding our colleagues to take a walk outside or get in the next round of tea(!) when we realise they haven’t stepped away from their computers in a while. We all know how easy it can be to become absorbed in a project, and if you’re not conscious of it, you can get to the end of the day and realise you haven’t so much as looked up from your laptop in hours!
Breaks are also a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues on different teams. We’re fortunate to have a lovely big communal kitchen at our office in Widcombe, which makes a great spot for a cup of tea and a chat. We know that maintaining good relationships is really important for mental wellbeing, so breaking to catch up with a friend is a double whammy for good mental health.
If you struggle to remember to take breaks throughout the day, we recommend setting an alarm on your phone to ensure you move away from your computer now and then. Give it a try and let us know how you get on by chatting to us on Twitter at @iaptustweets.
